Will Diets and Fasting Help with Fat Burning?
We absolutely hold to the science which says that a calorie deficit is the primary tool for losing fat, however, from your Fatmax test results, we’ll be able to advise whether specific strategies like low-carb or fasting might be a good idea for you to burn more fat, or whether there’s no need to go down that route. You might be able to reach your goals just by working out at your optimum fat-burning heart rate for longer and maintaining the deficit.

What is the Testing Procedure?
We conduct the FatMax test with our state-of-the-art Oxygen mixing chamber. We will fit you with a heart rate strap, and a mask. You will start the test seated, and will bring your breathing and heart rate down to resting levels.
We will stay like that for a couple of minutes before getting up to stand on the treadmill. We will stay there for a couple of minutes also. Then we will start you walking slowly on the treadmill, and every couple of minutes we will start to add incline. This means you will start on a flat surface, and then will be walking up a hill.
We will keep adding an incline to the test until we get the data we need. This might take you to the point of being slightly out of breath. We will then stop you and allow you to cool down and rest.
What we are looking for is measurement of how much fat and how much sugar you are burning at all the different intensities. Someone who is very inefficient at burning fat will be burning more sugar than fat even when at rest. This means it will be difficult for this person to lose fat unless they take some specific actions to address this inefficiency.
The full appointment will take 1 hour, including a full consultation and action plan for your results.
What Do I Get at the End of the Test?
Based on the data we get we will be able to give you guidance on the following questions:
– How much carbohydrate should I have in my diet?
– Should I be considering things like intermittent fasting?
– How intensely should I exercise to be burning fat?
– What time of day should I do my exercise?
– Does doing fasted cardio make a difference for me?
Who is FatMax Testing For?
It’s for people who are starting or continuing their weight loss journey and would like to understand more about what fuel their body is burning, for anyone looking to cut body fat in the most efficient way possible, and for anyone who wants to maximise the fat-burning results of their workouts.
If you want to understand the most effective strategies for you, based on your personal metabolic function, then this test is an invaluable tool.
What’s the Difference between Fat Burning and Cardio?
There is a difference between working out for fat-burning and working out for cardio. Generally, you are burning a mixture of fat and carbohydrate while you exercise. However, as intensity increases, you’ll burn more carbohydrates as it’s a faster-burning fuel for muscles.
Everyone has a zone however in which they are most effective at burning fat – your fat-burning zone This zone, once measured, is where the greater part of your cardio workouts should be spent, and will be different to the ideal zone for cardiovascular fitness. The optimum fat-burning heart rate zone is different for everyone, which is what you’ll find out with the Fatmax test from my Vital Metrics.
Why Would I Want to Do a FATMax Test?
The FATMAX and the associated report can help a lot with training for efficient fat burning. Together with the DEXA and a Resting Metabolic Rate Test, you can get a real understanding of how best to approach a fat loss journey, from a calories, macros and exercise perspective.
How Much Does a FATMax Test Cost?

Who Can Take a FATMax Test?
Anyone can take a FATMax test because, unlike in VO2 Max Testing, the intensity is not very high. You might raise a small sweat by the end of the test, but that is all. We usually do the test by having you walk on a treadmill, while changing the incline – so as long as you can walk up a hill, you should be fine.
How Do I Burn More Fat?
There are a couple of interventions that we can look at. For some, it might be just working out for longer in your optimum fat-burning zone, and keeping your calorie deficit where it is. For others, fat burning may be impaired and so we will suggest additional dietary interventions to help make your fat burning even more effective.
